On Feb 22, Discovery Channel released the documentary Exploring China's New Dairy Powder globally, recording the development of China's dairy industry and exploring what’s the science behind Chinese milk powder. Millions of babies are born in China every year. To fulfill their nutritional needs, there should be concentrated efforts. Rachele first visited Junlebao Dairy’s dairy farming base. The hardcore technology here impressed the Discovery host very much.

This giant turntable is a big departure from traditional farming methods, the equipment can milk 80 cows simultaneously assuming the cows remain at their posts. The facility is packed with intelligent equipment to maximize the cows’ comfort. The milking machine recreates the sensations of a feeding calf. And when there is no milk left, it can automatically detach itself.

The most unbelievable thing for Rachele is that the raw milk here goes directly to the processing plant through a 170-meter-long low-temperature tube. There is no extra transportation or storage. It takes only two hours before the milk enters the processing steps. "Without seeing a drop of milk, the milk powder is produced!"

這項“鮮奶密閉傳輸系統”技術是獲得了中國專利技術認證，確保了產品的安全、營養、新鮮、高品質，也保留了牛奶中更多的活性營養成分。

The cows’ job are built around a comfortable life. Junlebao's cowshed can take good care of 120,000 cows at the same time. The secret is that each cow is fitted with a smart collar, which can accurately identify the rumination, exercise and oestrus conditions of cows every day through big data and relay real-time data about their health. It will also input the milk yield into the system and output statistics, which provides efficient, fast and accurate first-hand data to realize intelligent feeding.

種好草：牛的專屬廚師都是“博士”

Here, the food expenses for each cow is an incredible 80 yuan ($12.6) a day. To figure out what this kind of price is like in the dairy industry, Rachele's second stop is the grass plantation.

君樂寶的種草基地位于張家口，是中國燕麥的三大主產區之一。這里生產的燕麥草，在收割時牧草不是金黃色，而是綠色，原來燕麥草在灌漿期（乳熟期）營養成分更為全面，很容易被奶牛吸收，所以收割的牧草都是綠色，君樂寶不惜成本為奶牛供給好的食材。

Junlebao Dairy’s grass plantation is located in Zhangjiakou, which is one of the three main oat producing areas in China. People harvest the grass when it is green rather than golden yellow. The reason for this is that the oat grass has the most nutrients during this grain filling period, which makes it easier to be absorbed by dairy cows. That’s why they harvest when it’s green. This is to prepare the best food for cows.

Junlebao planted around 253 square kilometers of grassland on Bashang Grassland in Zhangjiakou. Through working with the grassland research institute of China Agricultural University, Junlebao made key breakthroughs in variety improvement of the grass, which has improved the grass quality to an international level and greatly reduced the dependence on foreign product.

Up to now, Junlebao owns around 333 sq km of grassland. According to the company, such self-owned grassland is the starting point of Junlebao's whole industrial chain and the foundation of how they raise their cows. How is the milk powder produced? Following the Discovery’s camera, the factory is like the set of a sci-fi film:

When milk enters the factory, it is sterilized and separated and then goes through homogenization, degassing and pasteurization, and then its transported to the subsequent four-effect evaporation system. There are more than 1,500 digital sensors on the production line. All production processes are completely intelligent. High-tech equipment completes every process in order.

雖說是奶粉加工廠，但操作人員并沒有跟牛奶發生直接的接觸，只需要待在中控室里，就能確保各項操作準確無誤。

Although it is a milk powder processing plant, the operators finish the procedures without touching any of the fresh milk. They only need to stay in the control room to ensure exacting standards.
